Multi-leaf masonry walls: Load transfer mechanisms sensitivity to mechanic and geometric parameters

چکیده

Abstract The apparent monolithic behaviour of multi-leaf walls is compromised by the discontinuity planes that load transfer mechanisms generate for following reasons: i) difference between mechanical characteristics layers; ii) lack or weakness structural interaction core and external layers. goal this paper to evaluate through parametric analysis dimensional ratios reference confinement effects masonry with several interface study was carried out finite element performed in non-linear field on two-dimensional plain strain models calibrated experimental basis numerical results are presented discussed. horizontal interfaces hand performances walls. short specimens controlled layers while slender plane affect effect.

Multi-scale analysis of masonry walls

Masonry is a heterogeneous structural material which exhibits a complex behaviour with potential cracking in each of its phases. Its structure (geometrical arrangement of mortar joints, quasi-brittle constituents) causes the appearance of complex composite failure modes with loading path dependence and strong damage-induced anisotropy effects. Large scale computations for masonry structures req...

Homogenization of Interlocking Masonry Walls

In a previous publication the authors proposed a continuous model for describing the mechanical behaviour of ‘Running Bond’ masonry walls. Here a different masonry structure is considered. This structure is ‘bi-atomic’ in the sense that its pattern consists in two kind of blocks with different. The homogenization by differential expansions technique is used for obtaining an equivalent Cosserat ...

A Numerical Model for Multi-leaf Stone Masonry

ABSTRACT This paper presents a non-linear finite element material model for the analysis of the mechanical behavior of multi-leaf masonry, which is quite frequently used in ancient stone masonry buildings. A damage model, previously developed by some of the authors for brittle materials (namely, concrete) was adapted to fit the experimental stress−strain behavior of stone masonry. To this end, ...

Polarimetric radar signature of masonry walls

A ground-penetrating radar with polarimetric capability has been used for investigating masonry walls. The obtained results show that hollow spaces inside masonry give a well-detectable polarimetric signature that can be usefully used for detecting internal cavities in walls, and for characterizing the masonry. r 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Effective stiffness of unreinforced brick masonry walls

Code design of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings is based on elastic analysis, which requires as input parameter the effective stiffness of URM walls. Current approaches estimate the effective stiffness as fixed ratio of the gross sectional stiffness but comparisons with experimental results have shown that this does not yield satisfactory predictions. In this paper, a recently developed ana...
